The biggest problem with a Power Rangers movie is the baggage that comes with being Power Rangers. Its a cheesy, low budget TV show with people fighting in spandex and monster costumes aimed at kids and its generally treated as such outside of geek circles. Its perfectly acceptable to admit you watched and liked it as a child, but mention that you still watch it and odds are people will treat differently. Power Rangers is something you are supposed to have grown out of, and for a lot of people, they did. For the Power Rangers movie, the stigma of childishness might be too great to overcome. Unlike franchises like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers, Power Rangers has never had entries that were mainstream successes or an obvious angle to use to create mainstream appeal. But trying to make the movie a more serious, grounded take on the Power Rangers franchise could backfire. It could easily wind up like the Robocop and Total Recall remakes generic sci-fi action movies with parts of the story from the original sources taped on the script. With all the conceptual problems, the lackluster studio behind it, and an prospective audience that doesnt want film, the Power Rangers movie seems like the next big flop in the making. Can Lionsgate potentially pull off a miracle and make it a movie worth watching? Sure. But theyre starting off with deck heavily stacked against them.
