5 Reasons You Need To See Power/Rangers

4. It Knows Its History

Although based on the first two series, the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and its immediate successor Power Rangers Zeo, the film takes place in its own continuity, one in which the Rangers were actually defeated by the Machine Empire. Despite taking it in a different direction however, there is no doubt that it sticks closely to the established history. The film is replete with moments which delve into the backstory provided by the original series; through the use of interrogation and flashbacks the origins of Tommy's Green Ranger are recalled for example, as is his relationship with Kimberly. Korean General Klank is also named after the Zeo antagonist who serves the Royal House of Gadgetry, and although it is hard to specifically spot their appearances in the film itself, the credits also list the characters of Divatox, Scorpina, and Cestria. More than just characters though, the film also has a few nice moments which reference original cast members as well. Paying respect to Thuy Trang who died in a car crash aged just 27, in the midst of all the carnage and destruction, the film features a touching funeral for original yellow ranger Trini. David Yost's victory over past battles against negative attitudes towards his homosexuality (including his own) are also celebrated thanks to former Blue Ranger Billy being featured here happily smiling on the cover of Out magazine.
