50 God-Tier Acting Moments Buried in Bad Movies

19. Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Mission: Impossible 3

Sometimes, you get a performance so unnecessarily great that it leaves everyone in shock. Case in point: Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Mission: Impossible III.

Although the world lost Philip Seymour Hoffman far, far too soon, there is still a strong argument to be made that he was one of the best to ever do it. The man absolutely killed every single role he performed, and even when playing the part of Owen Davian - a fairly generic action villain on paper - Hoffman delivered a completely intoxicating performance that dripped with menace, cruelty, and sinister malevolence.

In a franchise that, as awesome as it mostly is, was never great at coming up with memorable villains, Davian stands tall and mighty as Mission: Impossible's best antagonist, which is ironic considering that the third film is one of the weaker entries. Though it's an improvement on the first and second movies (Mission: Impossible only really got going with 2011's fourth film), Mission: Impossible III is still a forgettable action flick at best that's only really memorable for the greatest American actor of his generation giving a dynamite, completely overqualified performance.
