50 Infuriating Horror Movie Characters We All Secretly Wanted To Die
47. Cabin Fever - Jeff
Director Eli Roth is definitely one of American Horror's kings of gore, regardless of the mixed quality of his films overall. His debut feature, Cabin Fever, in which the threat is a flesh-eating virus, established this immediately. It also established Roth's penchant for obnoxious characters that many probably hoped would snuff it sooner rather than later - that's a definite trend with his movies.
With Cabin Fever, which revolves around five young friends falling victim to a deadly flesh-eating virus, the main offender is Jeff (Joey Kern), a self-centred A-hole. While none of the five students are the most likable characters ever, this guy is by far the most irritating, and he ranks among horror's most self-centred characters, too.
When they first become infected, the other four do try to help each other, but Jeff? He leaves them all to die, including his own girlfriend, and rushes off into the woods, where he stays for most of the film. As a result, he's off-screen for much of it - small mercies!
He does eventually return at the end and, apparently unbothered by his friends dying horribly, celebrates being the only survivor... just before being shot dead by the police department, who are taking extreme measures to prevent the infection from spreading. This was an apparent homage to the ending of the aforementioned Night of the Living Dead, but instead of being harrowing, it was actually something of a 'punch-the-air' moment.
