50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2023

30. Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2

Sony

Ghostbusters Afterlife wasn't a great film, but it did at least learn some valuable lessons from 2016's ill-advised reboot, opting for a back-to-basics approach on a much lower budget while roping in the surviving legacy cast.

Its success ensured a sequel was fast-tracked into production, with Paul Rudd, McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Carrie Coon all signed to return.

Though Jason Reitman isn't returning to direct, he will co-write the screenplay, while Afterlife co-writer Gil Keenan steps into the director's chair.

Little is known about the story yet, beyond it taking place in New York City, suggesting we'll probably see further cameos from some of the series' legacy characters. Sigourney Weaver, anyone?

Shooting is expected to begin early next year, which means a tight production turnaround for a 2023 release, but given that Afterlife was originally set to release less than a year after it started filming, it's still possible it's ready for a December bow.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 (probably) releases in late 2023.

29. Scream VI

Paramount

Barely a year after the fifth Scream film brought the franchise screaming back to life, Scream VI will hit cinemas and radically stray from the series' formula by shifting the action from California to New York City.

With Ready Or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett returning alongside Scream writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, there's no reason not to expect another fun, self-aware slasher romp.

Though almost all major surviving characters are set to return - including Scream 4's Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettierre) - it's an undeniably sour note that Neve Campbell opted not to reprise the role of franchise lead Sidney due to Paramount giving her a low-ball salary offer.

As such, this will be the first Scream film to feature just a single member of the original trio, Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers, which given the series' desperate need to move past its legacy cast could actually be a blessing in disguise.

The early word is that Paramount is incredibly happy with test screening results, so it's easy to be optimistic about this one.

Scream VI releases on March 10.
