50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2023
22. Havoc
The Raid director Gareth Evans might've sworn off making a third entry into his hit Indonesian action series, but Havoc might well be the next best thing: a grimy action thriller in which Tom Hardy plays a detective fighting his way through a criminal underworld to rescue a politician's estranged son.
The prospect of pairing a filmmaker as accomplished as Evans with an actor as tenacious as Hardy speaks for itself. Basically, expect the action in this movie to be bone-crunchingly brutal, with an absurdly thick atmosphere to boot.
Hardy is joined by a stellar cast, including Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant, and Luis Guzmán.
Given that filming wrapped back in October 2021, hopefully we don't have much longer to wait for it.
Havoc releases on Netflix sometime in 2023.
21. The Little Mermaid
There's no denying that Disney's live-action remakes of their beloved animated classics have been incredibly hit-and-miss, so it remains to be seen precisely how The Little Mermaid will turn out.
The rather uneven Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods) directs a script promisingly co-written by David Magee (Finding Neverland) and Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class), while rising singer-actress Halle Bailey will play Ariel.
There are a few inspired casting picks to be found here - especially Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Javier Bardem as King Triton - and with original composer Alan Menken returning, while teaming with Lin-Manuel Miranda to pen new songs, it's easy to be pretty optimistic about this.
For anyone somehow craving another water-based blockbuster in their life after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water, they haven't got too long to wait.
The Little Mermaid releases on May 26.
