50 Movie Death Scenes That Left You TRAUMATISED
28. Ättestupa - Midsommar
If you're looking for disturbing, creepy, and downright distressing, look no further than Ari Aster. The director has made this a trademark across a relatively short career to date, and Midsommar is just the first of his films on this list.
His sophomore effort began with the heartbreaking death of both of Dani's (Florence Pugh) parents, as well as her sister, but this was far from the worst thing to happen on screen. There were horrific deaths throughout, but arguably the worst of which was during what the locals called the Ättestupa.
While attending a Swedish midsummer festival, a concept and event literally and metaphorically foreign to Dani's group, everything was uncertain. Things seemed strange from the beginning, but it wasn't until the ceremony in which two of the society's elders jumped to their deaths from atop a cliff that it became truly scary. This was something considered a great honour, however one of them survived the fall with a grotesquely shattered leg.
It was here that things went from hard to watch to cover-your-eyes kind of madness. His suffering was ended by several villagers taking a gigantic mallet to his head, something that Aster did not shy away from showing. This is the kind of thing you simply cannot unsee.
