27. Malik - Superman

Superman 2025

With Superman in 2025 came the first cinematic effort set completely within James Gunn's new DCU, and to say it has been a success, both critically and commercially, would be an understatement.

This was a full reset, and not only was David Corenswet's Superman far different in tone from Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder's, but Nicholas Hoult offered a simply immeasurable improvement on Jesse Eisenberg's iteration of Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He played every part of it well, from being believably super intelligent to raging with jealousy, in a way that emphasised how ruthless the villain could be.

This was never more apparent than within his pocket universe prison. He held people against their will for the slightest things, and even kept Rex (Anthony Carrigan) in place by threatening his newborn child. A threat that you always believed he would have no problem carrying out. Then, there was the fate of Malik (Dinesh Thyagarajan), the man who had once served Superman food.

Kal-El barely knew the man, and yet Luthor still used him to interrogate his nemesis. In a game of Russian Roulette, Malik lasted just two questions before he was shot in the head by a completely remorseless Lex. David Corenswet's screams of anguish sold this as the worst thing that had ever happened to him, as a Man of Steel who truly cared about every single person and creature on the planet.
