50 Movie Death Scenes That Left You TRAUMATISED

21. Noah & Allie - The Notebook

The Notebook
New Line Cinema

As far as romantic movies go, The Notebook is typically a consensus pick as one of the best the genre has to offer. Of course, casting Ryan Gosling opposite Rachel McAdams helped greatly, but it was where their characters had grown old that the film offered its most harrowing moment.

Gosling and McAdams portrayed Noah and Allie in the 1940s through the ups and downs of their love, but in the present day, Allie (Gena Rowlands) was suffering with dementia, while Noah (James Garner) regaled her with their story from the titular notebook in an attempt to bring her memories back to her.

It's hard to think of something more genuinely terrifying and upsetting than forgetting about those that you love, which is why Noah continued to try and get through to Allie even after she screamed that he was a stranger touching her.

Noah then sneaked in to see her in her hospital room, and for a fleeting moment, she remembered him. It was incredibly emotional, but nothing compared to the fact that they were both found dead the next morning, holding each other's hands. It's the quintessential romance story with an ending that could bring a tear to even the most hardened of hearts.
