13. Charlie - Hereditary

As discussed earlier in this list, Midsommar acted as a strong sophomore effort for Ari Aster. However, though the film was disturbing and unsettling, it simply couldn't quite live up to what had come before it. That is nothing against Midsommar, it's just that Hereditary is unlike anything else.

It's not classic horror that gets the audience with this film - there aren't many jump scares or many overly gory scenes - but rather the constant feeling of unease and tension, and just knowing that something bad is about to happen.

Though there was an anticipation of unspeakable things happening from the beginning, no one could have expected exactly what happened to Charlie (Milly Shapiro), who was very much framed as the central character to begin with. While having an allergic reaction to a walnut, her brother Peter (Alex Wolff) rushed her to the hospital. Charlie stuck her head out of the window to gasp for air, and was decapitated by a telephone pole with a sickening snap.

The rest of the film goes deeper into grief, possession, the occult, and more, yet even after everything else it has to throw at the audience, it is hard to shake the image of what happened to poor Charlie.
