23. Othello (Any Version)
Plot: The Moorish general Othello is manipulated by his evil ensign Iago into thinking that his innocent wife Desdemona is having an affair, and Othello's jealousy and paranoia drive him mad.
There have been several adaptations of William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, and while they vary in quality and presentation, they all end in a similar way to the source material, thus guaranteeing a brutal emotional wallop at the end.
There is a case to be made that Othello is William Shakespeare's most disturbing play. If nothing else, it's perhaps the only one where evil completely wins. Sure, Iago is taken into custody, and he's probably going to be executed, but it'd be hard to view his ending as anything other than a complete victory. He succeeded in destroying Othello in the cruellest of ways and destroyed many other innocent lives in the process.
Whichever version of the play you see, the ending is utterly brutal, and the murder of the completely innocent Desdemona by her own husband is difficult to stomach. Othello is a harrowing, bruising, and practically perfect tragedy, all set in motion by one of the most insidious, sinister villains in all of fiction. At the end, Iago coldly refuses to explain why he has done this to Othello, making him perhaps the embodiment of pure, motiveless evil.
