7 Films That Make Interesting Points On Society

1. Ingrid Goes West - Social Media & Influencers

Jokes at the expense of Millenials and social media feels like low hanging fruit, but in the underrated dark comedy Ingrid Goes West, the film does highlight some corners of social media that are eerily real and worrying.

Let's first caveat this post by saying that Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) clearly needs professional help, and mental health is at the forefront of this film more than social media itself.

And while the final moments do present a questionable take on suicide attempts that could be mis-communicated as being positive, social media is still the overlaying catalyst in the film.

The film not only shows us the fragile mind of an Instagram stalker, but how easy it can be to idolize the influencers who (at least in Ingrid Goes West) present little substance to their posts, and even come across as hollow and disconnected.

Elizabeth Olsen and Wyatt Russell's characters aren't villains, but they certainly don't help the problem we face today with vulnerable young people obsessing over influencers. The reality of being Instagram famous is presented as empty and lacking conviction of what can truly make us happy.

If the film does have advice for audiences, it's "put your phone down, this isn't real".

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
