7 Massive Misconceptions About Classic Movies You Probably Believe

5. The Nightmare Before Christmas Wasn't Written By Tim Burton

NBC I€™ll be honest from the off; I€™m not a massive fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas. There€™s a couple of decent songs and the animation is good for the most part, but it never quite succeeds, either as a heart-warming story or gothic fairytale. Yet somehow it remains a classic in the eyes of many and it€™s almost mythical status is likely why this particular misconception has lasted so long. The Nightmare Before Christmas was written by Caroline Thompson and directed by Henry Selick, but time and again either of those is attributed to Tim Burton. Burton came up with the idea as a poem in 1982 and once he became a bankable success at the end of the decade he got the opportunity to turn it into a feature. But when he did he handed over the directing and writing duties to others, staying on only as producer. Most fans in the know will accept he didn't direct, but most will consolidate that by claiming he was the writer and while he certainly had a large creative influence on the concept, he didn't play a major role (the film is quite clearly Selick's). Unfortunately, his name adorning the film€™s title means fans are destined to continue to make this mistake.
