7 Reasons The MCU Is Better Off Without Joss Whedon
2. So Have Markus And McFeely
Although the Russos deserve heaps of praise for what they've accomplished with the Captain America films, the unsung heroes of those films are undoubtedly writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
Plot-wise, The Winter Soldier and Civil War and far and away the best written films in the MCU. The Winter Solider is an extremely tight political thriller in the guise of a superhero film. It’s made some interesting and brilliant choices in transplanting Captain America in the muddied world of modern espionage while proving to be a real game-changer for the whole universe.
Civil War was an even more complex plot which they handled beautifully. Unlike Batman V Superman, the reason for fighting is somehow rational on both side, the character motivations are believable and the conclusion seems earned.
Markus and McFeely have even shown to succeed where Whedon has struggled. Characters like Scarlet Witch and The Vision were given a lot more depth in Civil War and new characters like Spider-Man and Black Panther were introduced without feeling shoehorned in. The writers have also shown an awareness of appropriate tone. The airport sequence in Civil War has some of the funniest moments from any MCU film, while the film confrontation is among the universe’s darker moments.
With all their strengths, it’s then good news for all Marvel fans that Markus and McFeely will be joining the Russos for the Infinity War films.
