7 Reasons The MCU Is Better Off Without Joss Whedon

1. He Wasn't The Team Player They Needed

A common complaint leveled against Marvel is that they don’t let their filmmakers make their own movie. Critics say they put too much emphasis on serving the bigger picture so filmmakers are restricted in what they can do. It’s said that this insistence on connective tissue to the rest of the MCU is what caused Edgar Wright to walk away from Ant-Man. While that departure hurt, Marvel was totally in the right.

The MCU is a series of films all connecting to one another and as much as you can say Iron Man 3 is a standalone film, what happens in one film affects the rest of the films. It’s completely understandable if some filmmakers are turned off by that but anyone who agrees to join the MCU needs to know that they’re just one player on a much bigger team.

It’s disappointing then, that after several years of involvement, Whedon still didn’t seem to care about the bigger picture. He made his films with little regard for what came before or what had to follow. The Bifrost is destroyed? Thor still gets to Earth no problem. Iron Man retired and destroyed all his suits?

He’s back in action with a new suit. Whedon had ideas for how he wants his films to be and expected the rest of the universe to cater to those visions. He even spoke about wanting to throw in a two-second cameo from Spider-Man and Captain Marvel at the end of Age of Ultron? Is that really how you want those characters to be introduced?

Whedon has done a lot for the MCU, but as the universe continues to expand it needs collaborators who are onboard with serving the overall all series rather than focusing solely on their film.
