7 Times Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Misses The Mark

5. Lack Of Strange Focus

Doctor Strange Multiverse Of Madness
Disney

Without a doubt, this is a Doctor Strange film. On a basic level, the title confirms it, as does the wacky and weirdness of the mystic side of Marvel. But how much does it focus on Strange himself?

Not nearly enough.

The film focuses more on the Scarlet Witch, her goal and simply trying to stop her.

The only real story for Stephen is the subplot of Strange's feelings towards Christine, and that being explored with both the 616 and 838 versions. Otherwise, everything else is seemingly just happening around him. For the MCU, two hours is pretty tight, but if that comes at the cost of main character development, maybe a longer run time is better?

The main thing lacking from Strange's develop is seemingly no focus on the price of magic. We'll get to this more later, but a sub-plot of the first film focused on the fact that magic has a price. In the comics recently, this plot has been at the forefront of Stephen's journey.

Whilst the final and mid-credit scene hints at greater Strange development, it's annoying we have to wait till the next sequel to get that. We need to fully explore the price of Strange's actions, not just touch upon it!
