7 Times Movie Studios And Directors Went To War
1. Justice League
Since Zack Snyder directed the first chapter of the DC Extended Universe, Man of Steel, it seemed sensible that he would take the reins of Justice League. After his films, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman received mixed reviews, DC fans were worried.
In March 2017, Snyder’s daughter, Autumn, passed away. In May, Snyder stepped away from the film to be with his family and Joss Whedon had to take over directing duties. Snyder’s departure put such a strain on the production, the studio considered delaying the film’s release to 2018.
Whedon made extensive reshoots to fit his tone, which made the budget skyrocket to $300 million. It ended up making $658 million, making it the least successful DCEU film at the time. Since it received lukewarm reviews, fans demanded that the studio release Snyder's cut of the film, believing it would be superior.
But it gets worse.
In February 2018, Josh Dickey quit his job as an entertainment reporter. Upon ending his career, he decided to tweet several secrets about the movie industry. He tweeted, “Zack Snyder was fired from the DCEU just over a year ago. Couldn’t write it-quite-that way at the time, but was able to tapdance around it.” Collider editor, Matt Goldberg confirmed this, stating he heard Justice League crewmembers saying this during production, since Snyder’s cut of the film was said to be “unwatchable.” Since Snyder just lost his daughter, the producers didn’t want to come across as cruel so they stated he walked away from the production.
Nevertheless, the stars of the movie, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and others have called for the Snyder Cut to be released. Although the studio stated in November 2019 that they have no intention of releasing a cut, fans are more passionate than ever to see it.
