74. Die Hard (1989) - John McTiernan
Die Hard (1989) - John McTiernanNew York cop John McClane gives terrorists a dose of their own medicine as they hold hostages in an LA office building. Whenever I think of the archetypal action movie that all films of that genre try to aspire to, I think of Die Hard. The movie has been reproduced and blatanly stole from countless number of times in the 90's and 00's but you know what? I've never seen any action movie come close to the greatness that is Die Hard. Bruce Willis stars in his career defining role of John McClane, the vest-wearing, wise-cracking everyman cop who defined the male action hero for years to come. McClane is visiting his wife for Christmas when an office building holding millions of dollars (and his wife) is taken over by German terroists. The movie is focused on his mission to outsmart and outmanouvere them and save the 30 hostages trapped in the building.... all by himself! I've noticed that in my list of favourite movies, so many of them contain great villains and you really do have to search far and wide to find a better one than Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber. He is the perfect villain to play off John McClane. He is calculated, cold, intelligent and a clean cut suit wearing bad guy who like all great villains, doesn't actually believe he is the bad guy. Rickman would go on to play another awesome villain as The Sherwood of Nottingham in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, but he will always be remembered for his role as the terroist Hans Gruber. Die Hard is such a fun movie, it takes absolutley zero intelligence to enjoy it but who cares? It's a movie I will watch EVERYTIME I see it on TV and never get bored with it. There isn't many movies as fun as Die Hard. Yippee-ki-yay MotherF*****
