Queen Kelly never got a theatrical release in the US, and that's because of the tensions that developed between director Erich Von Stroheim and Gloria Swanson during the making of the infamous silent film. You might remember that these two both appeared (as actors) in Billy Wilder's classic
Sunset Boulevard, but before they were co-stars in that movie, they were falling out in this one. The reason? Gloria Swanson got paranoid that the original script with being misinterpreted on the screen - that's to say, she thought that Eric von Stoheim was purposely trying to sneak in racy sequences without her noticing. She had him fired, and took over directing.
