2. Election
The Movies So Far...Election (2005),
Election 2 (2006) You might not be familiar with Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To's fantastic
Election series - aside from being critically-acclaimed and praised by filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, though,
Election could be seen as the Hong Kong equivalent of
The Godfather. That's to say, these movies - which both deal with separate election periods within a Chinese Triad syndicate - are gripping, bloody, and visually stunning gangster movie efforts. In the first movie, we follow two Triads as they fight for their right to the chairman position at the top of a renowned criminal organisation. In the sequel, the winner has to face off against a younger competitor, who finds himself - much like Al Pacino's Michael Corleone - drawn into the business in ways he never intended. Both movies are excellent, and the second installment ended on a cliffhanger that practically demands a final chapter. C'mon, Johnnie - get on with it!
