8 Great Movies Everyone Expected To Suck

1. Jaws

Jaws Titanic Ghostbusters
Universal Pictures

Yep, Jaws.

Hard as it might be to believe now, Jaws seemed certain to be an epic disaster. The movie’s fraught production is well known by now; it went nearly a hundred over schedule, the mechanical shark kept breaking down, shooting on the sea was a nightmare, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss despised each other and all the problems added millions to the budget.

The press often mocked the movie’s woes when reporting on it, and Dreyfuss even predicted Jaws would be a disaster during an interview; he blamed Universal for starting without a finished script and not giving Spielberg more pre-production time.

It’s wise not to underestimate Spielberg though, who managed to snatch victory from the literal Jaws of defeat. Despite the chaos of the production, everything worked perfectly in the final product, from the performances to the editing, music score and direction.

The movie was huge and became the first real summer blockbuster; Dreyfuss has since admitted he might have been wrong with his dire prediction.
