8 Horror Movie Monsters Scarier Than The Actual Villain

The second Conjuring movie on this list, it's worth reiterating that their appearances aren't implying the movies have lacklustre main villains, just that the supporting monsters are so good they manage to steal the show.

That's never more true than in the first movie though. While this effort is ostensibly about the spirit of Bathsheba Sherman terrorising a family, the standout villain of the piece was actually the doll Annabelle, which showed up for a brief, show-stopping set piece late in the movie.

Now, you might not remember Bathsheba, but you certainly will have heard of Annabelle, not least because she's enjoyed three spin-off movies all about her.

The creepy doll scared audiences silly, despite spending most of the runtime locked safely in the Warrens' protected room of malevolent spirits and potential Blockbuster spin-offs.

Bathsheba's possession still brought some brilliant scares - I'll never forget the woman creeping atop of the wardrobe - but Annabelle was clearly the MVP of this first flick.
