8 Insanely Complex Movies That Will Blow Your Mind

2. Synecdoche, New York

Coherence Movie
Sony

With a title as clever as its inner workings, Synecdoche, New York is a mashup of both the place Schenectady, New York and the term synecdoche, the representation of something small as the whole. It makes sense when considering the film is about a director reenacting his vision of the city in a mock-up version of it, creating a microcosm of New York on a small scale intended to reflect the Big Apple itself.

It's some weird representation of fakery, and art as integral to life but destined to fail in the same way as we're all just human in the end after all. If that makes no sense, then we're on the right tracks. Synecdoche, New York is a weird amalgamation of one man's perception of reality and fiction combined with the progression of life, death, and love - some very big ideas to squash into a two hour time frame.

But then again, it is Charlie Kaufman in his first directorial piece, after screenwriting mind-melters like Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, so anything is possible.
