8 Modern Horrors Ruined By Their Monster Reveal
5. Grave Encounters
Grave Encounters is a 2011 found footage horror film, following the unique narrative of an American ghost hunting team who take part in their newest 'lock in' within the confines of a haunted asylum, only to discover they cannot escape and are being tricked by the spirits who reside there.
For many, Grave Encounters is a parody based on well known ghost hunter programmes on the rise in the 21st century, looking at the tropes and subverting them to make something genuinely quite scary as the plot continues. The group are separated, using only their handheld cameras and their own tech for comfort to find their way out, with the walls and doors of the building swapping around at any given moment and sinister shadows lurking around the corner.
And then we reach the third act. As with any horror story, the movie must reveal who is behind the disappearances and strange goings on as the last remaining members of the cast find their way to the exit. Their deaths become laughable: one man levitates across the room as a beam of light explodes behind him and one woman literally disappears in a puff of smoke.
The CGI spirits make audiences wonder: was that it? They just get sillier and sillier until the credits roll.
