8 Moments In Back To The Future That Could Have Been VERY Different

5. The Title

Once the filmmakers were happy with their final script, Universal agreed to take on the mammoth mission of shooting the film with Steven Spielberg volunteering to also take part. The title 'Back To The Future' was one that was agreed early on by Zemeckis and Gale however Sid Sheinberg head of the studios agreed to disagree pitching the new title 'Spaceman From Pluto'...

Sheinberg wrote to the writers that the original title was less than wonderful and appeared to make the film sound like a genre time travel picture, deserving a better title in the new edits and cinema release. The producer was confused about the old title, as Marty wasn't going to the future but returning to his own present day 1985 instead.

He listed changes to be made throughout the dialogue and George McFly's book at the end of the film to be changed accordingly.

Both filmmakers laughed at the new idea (unsurprisingly) and sent a message back to Sheinberg that he must have given the suggestion as a joke and nothing more was heard about it. They were given the green light anyway with the original idea.
