8 Moments In Back To The Future That Could Have Been VERY Different

4. Marty's Job

In the movie, Marty's job is never seen on screen and it is suggested that he only takes the role of part-time student part-time aspiring rock star. At 17 years old, Marty regularly helps his best friend Doc Brown with his science experiments to gain some extra money.

When first introduced in the original first draft however, McFly and Brown are running a video-pirating business within the upstairs of an abandoned movie theatre. Video piracy was a new concept during the 1980's and this gave the character a more rebellious side compared with his father George.

This concept was ditched after the second draft, in which it was suggested that the protagonist of the movie could not be a video pirate as this would promote the role for the young children watching. Zemeckis and Gale changed the opening in the third draft to the famous scene within the released film: multiple clocks appear on screen, Doc's machines whir into action to make Einstein's dinner and Marty turns up the giant speaker amp on his new electric guitar a little too much causing him to be catapulted across the room.
