8 Moments That Almost Killed Star Wars
1. Solo Singlehandedly Killed "A Star Wars Story"
Events or films that nearly brought about the end of Star Wars also include projects that completely upended the franchise. Solo: A Star Wars Story is a perfect example of this because while it didn't kill the franchise, it definitely altered its path forward.
Solo was meant to kickstart a series of films that would make the Star Wars franchise the equivalent of another Disney property: the MCU. Marvel movies have been making the House of Mouse billions, and the studio wanted to replicate that success with Star Wars, beginning with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The plan was to launch a brand new anthology series that would follow a similar format to Rogue One and Solo - with spin-off films centred on Boba Fett and Obi-Wan in production - but the latter's performance at the box office as well as the behind-the-scenes trouble surrounding the film derailed the plan. All talk of anthology films came to a screeching halt.
Since the conclusion of the Sequel Trilogy, Star Wars is taking a different path going forward, with greater emphasis on TV and Disney+. Future Star Wars efforts are in the works, but plans for a Solo sequel are long gone.
