8 More Recent Movies Most Obviously Ruined By Bad Editing
7. The Meg Undoes The Threat Of Its Own Villain
For all its flaws (and blatant pandering to the Chinese market), The Meg was a surprisingly solid monster movie. Unfortunately, while the idea of a prehistoric shark escaping from an uncharted part of the ocean underneath the seabed is awesome, it was somewhat undermined by editing which made it impossible to properly get a handle on the The Meg's size or how much of a threat it posed.
When the characters are in the shark's own habitat, it's the deadliest thing alive, attacking anything that moves. However, once the heroes are back on the surface, all that menace dissipates. The tension is sucked out entirely because the editing gives you no inclination as to how far the characters are from the beast, meaning it's never clear when they're in danger or when they're safe.
To make matters worse, when things truly kick off in the final third, the erratic editing doesn't convey which characters have been hurt or where the shark even is. Cutting to random moments of chaos and anarchy for maximum spectacle, the movie loses track of its own cast. You'll see some people get thrown off the boat and into the water, but they won't be shown again until the scene is over, and it can result in you leaving the movie not even knowing who lived and who died.
