Lake Placid is an unlikely series; the original was a tongue in cheek Jaws rip-off from the writer of Ally McBeal and featured a quality cast including Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, and Brendan Gleeson. It was a decent hit, but it didn’t exactly scream franchise.

Where there's killer animals the SyFy channel won’t be far behind, so they churned out a sequel in 2007. It was a crappy creature feature that lacked everything - especially the budget - that made the original fun. Lovers of bad b-movies lapped it up, however, so part three wasn’t far behind. They labelled part four "The Final Chapter", even though the ending totally left the door open for more dodgy looking CGI crocodiles.

Three years later, the series was back in a crossover with the Anaconda series, and although there’s no word on future instalments, it’s a safe bet it’ll happen at some stage. The series is a guilty pleasure in its own way, even if the movies are mostly a croc of s...
