4. It Prevents Star Wars & Star Trek Becoming Homogenised
One of the major concerns when Abrams first got the Star Wars gig was that, in acting as the custodian over two sci-fi franchises - because even if he doesn't direct Trek 3, he will serve as a producer - we might end up with the homogenisation of the two most popular and iconic sci-fi franchises on the planet. Given that Abrams has a number of defining aesthetic characteristics - namely lens flare, for instance - if they also appear in Episode VII, the director runs the risk of rendering the two properties as relatively indistinguishable from one another. Though there's always the possibility that Abrams could "bring harmony" to the decades-long Trek vs. Wars feud, it's more likely that Star Wars fans will simply see him as Star Trek-ifying the beloved franchise, and destroying much of its personality.
