8 Reasons Jurassic World Could Become The Highest Grossing Movie Ever

4. The Surcharge

Like any new mainstream release, Jurassic World is being released in 3D. While stereoscopy doesn't quite hold audiences' excitement like it did when Avatar hit (Gravity aside, there's been no real creative use of the technology), restrictive screening times and a general feeling that it doesn't negatively affect a film (unless you're one of the sizeable minority who can't actually see the effect) mean many chose to see World in this format; almost half of the money it has made (48%) comes from 3D tickets. And, as your wallet no doubt knows, 3D comes with a hefty surcharge (now doubled down on, with audiences paying twice - for the effect and the glasses to see it), meaning that from fewer tickets the film can make considerably more money. But it's not just 3D that's adding to Jurassic World's stock. It's subject to a rather big IMAX release and, with all the hype around the film's visuals, it's clear many people have been choosing to fork out the extra cash to see it on the biggest screen possible; thanks to World, IMAX takings are the highest they've been in a year. And, whereas 3D adds a little to the ticket price, IMAX pretty much doubles it, meaning fewer bums needed to make the same sort of profit. It's irritating Hollywood business mechanics, but when we're discussing financial success on such a large, industry changing scale, all variables need to be taken into account.
