8 Reasons Triple 9 Could Be The Most Underrated Film Of 2016
8. The Opening Is A Nail-Biter
Triple 9 throws you straight into the action with minimal exposition. We are introduced to the central thieves, already on their way to a bank heist, as their conversation quickly shows us who means what to whom. We have the ex-soldier best friends and partners, the loose cannon and the nervous problem child.
With their ill-gotten gains, the crew steal a car and hastily make their escape. But, the short-sighted robbery of a bag of clearly baited cash and all of a sudden red smoke starts filling the car and blinding the driver. What follows is a highway assault reminiscent of Michael Mann's 'Heat', as our crew exit the car covered head to toe in red dust (as 'red as the Devil's d*ck' according to one character).
The whole sequence is nail-biting stuff, with the image of assault rifle wielding masked men covered in red being instantly iconic. The break-neck pace combined with frantic direction makes for an opening to rival all others this year. Not a bad start.
