8 Reasons You Should Be Excited For The Predator

5. Tackling Complex Themes

When the first trailer for The Predator was released, it caught a great many fans by surprise that it started by focusing on a young boy. Never before in the franchise's history has a child played a significant role, much less been the first thing shown from the film.

But all of this is in keeping with what Thomas Jane told reporters from Shadow Nation months ago; that the film was going to be an ambitious project that tackled the themes of PTSD in veterans and how it affects their families.

"We play these veterans from like Afghanistan, Iraq war or whatever. But we’re all... crazy so we go to the VA hospital to get our meds. We’re all like shellshocked, PTSD…soldiers. We’re at the VA hospital and we’re in group therapy and of course, somebody flips out…this is backstory, I don’t think we really see this…somebody flips out and we all get arrested and get thrown onto the bus to go down to the hospital and they throw this other guy on the bus too."

Considering that the original Predator film was very much John McTiernan's meta-commentary on the state of masculinity and action movies in the late eighties, all while spotlighting the not-so-public military operations being conducted in South America at the time, the new film looks to carry on this tradition. The Predator is going to have a lot more to say than the average, mindless monster film.
