8 Sci-Fi Movie Remakes You Didn't Know Were In The Works

It's hard to believe that 1983's WarGames doesn't already have a remake. It's one of the most prolific family films of the '80s, and its concept is immensely pliable; it could easily be made grittier and darker, or, conversely, lighter, sillier and more kid-friendly.

Said concept involves a naive young hacker (Matthew Broderick), who, while thinking he's playing a video game, almost unwittingly starts World War III.

A remake has tried - and failed - to get off the ground several times. In 2009, it was reported that none other than Leonardo DiCaprio was looking to reboot the film, and in 2011, Horrible Bosses helmer Seth Gordon was signed to direct, after DiCaprio's efforts fell through.

That didn't work out either, and now Dean Israelite (Power Rangers, Project Almanac) is onboard to craft the remake.

He offered an update to Den Of Geek in 2015, stating that he's been "developing the script," and that "if there was ever a movie primed to say something new and bold and relevant for our time, it's WarGames. So that's why I see the potential in remaking the movie".

We're inclined to agree. The original WarGames released before the Internet, before social media, and before online gaming; retelling the story with modern tools and all-new concepts would be a fascinating watch, and one we can't wait to experience through a contemporary lense.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
