8 Signs Colin Farrell Is The New Matthew McConaughey
6. Run Of Bad Studio Movies
Big budget studio blockbusters need A-list stars. They sell the action and their recognizability brings audiences in. The roles pay well, the budgets are huge and the movie is guaranteed to be released. The downside, of course, is that many of these movies aren’t very good. There are plenty of great blockbuster films, it just seems that Farrell and McConaughey never managed to find themselves starring in one.
For instance, Reign of Fire and Sahara are not two movies that come to mind when thinking of successful summer blockbusters. Yet, for years, those were two of Matthew McConaughey’s most recognizable roles. He wasn’t good, he wasn’t bad, he was just kind of there, and despite the movies failing, the offers kept rolling in.
Similarly, what started out as a minor flirtation in Alexander turned into a full-blown affair in more recent years for Farrell. Whether it be the sci-fi remake Total Recall or the romantic epic Winter’s Tale, Farrell seemed to keep choosing the wrong roles.
Though these strings of films likely resulted in exposure and financial gain they never could have gotten otherwise, it seems like this was the point where each actor realized these were not the kind of movies they wanted to keep making, and so the change began.
