8 Smartest Decisions Made By Saw Characters

2. Hoffman Survives The Reverse Beartrap (Saw VI)

Just like Strahm, Mark Hoffman was placed into a supposedly unwinnable situation at the climax of Saw VI, only this one was set to have a much more grisly outcome.

After being captured by John Kramer's ex-wife Jill, Hoffman is strapped to a chair, and has a reverse beartrap attached to his head. While it's normally possible to escape this particular trap - like when Amanda Young used a key in the original film - Hoffman is basically left for dead, and it's only with some smart, out-of-the-box thinking that he's able to escape the trap with his head intact. Mostly.

After using the beartrap to smash his hand to pieces - allowing him to slip it out of the straps on the chair - Hoffman enters a blind panic, frantically trying to use a screwdriver to set himself free. However, this effort fails miserably.

Then, just as it looks like it's game over, Hoffman decides to ram the front part of the trap in-between the bars located on the door, preventing it from springing open and tearing his head apart. He then has to pull his head out of the trap, sustaining some serious injuries in the process. But crucially, he's alive.

This is another moment of pure genius, with Hoffman able to survive a nearly impossible situation with some truly brilliant thinking. The vast majority of people would have died here, but Hoffman... he clearly had his Weetabix in the morning.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
