8 Things We're Sure We've Seen In Films (But Actually Haven't)
1. Miss Honey In The Chokey - Matilda
As young children, the notion of going in the Chokey was the stuff of nightmares. Employed by tyrant headmistress Agatha Trunchbull, it was a terrifying combination of iron maiden and medieval oubliette, with nails and broken glass sticking out of the walls waiting to injure any child who so much as moved an inch when incarcerated. Come to think of it, that's nightmarish even as an adult.
Fans of the 1996 film adaptation will remember the Chokey's first appearance, when classmate Hortensia describes its horror and is seen being thrown in during a flashback. Matilda herself is later put in after her con-man father sells Miss Trunchbull a defective car.
She is rescued by her saintly teacher Miss Honey shortly afterwards, just in time to witness her class's newt-related practical joke. Finally, in a lovely inversion of the previous scene, we all remember Trunchbull locking Miss Honey herself in the Chokey towards the end of the film - only for Matilda to triumphantly rescue her and bring about the evil headmistress's downfall.
There's one problem with this, though - that scene doesn't happen. In fact, nothing even resembling Miss Honey being put in the Chokey takes place in the film at all. Fans of Matilda have argued ceaselessly about its existence, asserting that there must have been an alternate cut in which the scene takes place, but no such thing exists. As you're reading this you won't believe it, so why not go back and give the film a rewatch? After all, it is a joyous, anarchic 90 minutes that deserves revisiting.
