Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter's relationship was born on the set of psychological crime drama Dexter. In the series, Hall played the titular vigilante serial killer, while Carpenter played his foster sister, homicide detective Debra Morgan. The on-screen siblings and off-screen partners dated for two years before eloping in 2008, but their marriage was a short-lived one.

In 2010, the same year in which Hall began his treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma, they announced that they were filing for divorce. The co-stars, who had already been separated for some time at this point, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. Despite their unsuccessful marriage, the two remained close friends, continuing to work together until the show's conclusion in 2013.

Hall is reprising the role of Dexter Morgan in a limited series which is due to be released later this year, and although Carpenter will not be joining him, anybody who has seen season eight will understand that this is related to her character's storyline rather than the history she shares with her ex.

Harbouring no grudges, both actors have formed new relationships since their divorce. Having fully recovered from cancer, Hall embarked on his third marriage, tying the knot with Morgan MacGregor in 2016. Meanwhile, Carpenter gave birth to a baby boy in 2015, and later married her child's father, folk-rock musician Seth Avett.
