3. Argo
Right up until the film's pulse-pounding climax, Ben Affleck made only minimal changes to the true story of the Iranian Revolution. And it was all typical Hollywood xenophobia. The United States was responsible for all of the heroics, while every other nation tasked with assisting was either minimally involved, incompetent, or downright unwilling to help. Cue the chants of "USA!" Except that Canada was actually way more involved than the States. And that the British and New Zealand embassies were responsible, in a major way, for ensuring the safety of the American hostages from the film. Because, let's not forget that the six US Diplomats were still technically in Tehran, and in constant danger anytime they had to leave their safe house. ...Except that's not true either. Because they had plenty of places they could go without having to fear for being caught. Well, besides their tense escape at the end, with the group encountering complication after complication at the Iranian airport, leading to a dramatic chase on the runway, with a group of armed military pursuing the departing plane right up until it finally lifts off, keeping our protagonists are safe once and for all! Now, let's hear the real story of that daring climax from one of the six diplomats, Lee Schatz:
"I walk up, hand them this, and we know this is clearly a false document that has been prepared on our behalf. I handed it to the individual, and he looked at my passport and walked into a side room. And I thought, 'Whoa. They can't actually match up these numbered pieces of paper, can they?' Seemed like forever. This guy came out stirring a cup of tea."
Just a guard on a tea break causing a mild bit of panic for
one of the six escapees. After that, everything went smooth as silk. Not quite the thrilling pursuit Argo made it out to be.
