8 Unpopular Movie Plot Twists That Don't Get Enough Credit

1. The Village (2004)

VillageThe Twist: A creepy thriller movie set at in an isolated community at some point in the early 19th century... but wait, this is a film by M. Night Shyamalan, so of course the movie is actually in the modern day, and the village elders have been keeping it a secret from everybody else to protect them from humanity (or something). Why It's Universally Hated: It seems pretty lame, considering that it the entire movie is based around the idea that a community aren't aware that the modern era is a few miles away, but for what real purpose? It's almost as if M. Night Shyamalan wrote this movie just so he had an excuse to use this twist or something. Oh. Why It Deserves More Credit: All right, so the execution was lacking, but you can't really say that the general idea was all that bad - it's an intriguing prospect, and one that would have probably been improved had Shyamlan explored the repercussions of what happens if said village has to suddenly face up to the real world. If he'd have opted to split the movie down the middle, with the "twist" at the mid-point, and then explored the exposure of the village or something, it might've been more interesting. As it stands, it's an alright twist, but nowhere near as bad as everybody claims it is. And remember... if this had been a movie by anyone else, we probably wouldn't have guessed that a twist was coming at all. This is just where it became popular to hate on the Shya-Man, and we were all mentally prepared for a twist from the get-go. Had anybody else helmed this movie, it might've been better received - our expectations would have been different, at least. Like this article? Let us know in the comments section below.
