8 Upcoming Movies Everybody Already Hates

7. The Han Solo Standalone Movie

The Hate: Lord & Miller were fired, and the movie could potentially ruin a beloved character.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller - directors of 21/22 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie - seemed like the perfect fit for a Han Solo movie. The pair are known for their witty scripts and memorable characters, two things that should be at the heart of the upcoming spinoff.

Unfortunately, they were removed from the project last June, with the directors reportedly not making the film the way Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy wanted them to.

And that's precisely the problem.

Lucasfilm brought in Ron Howard to replace them, and while he's a talented guy, he'll likely deliver a safe, risk-free, more generic Han Solo movie than the livelier, more unique vision that Lord and Miller would have brought. Ron Howard isn't really directing Han Solo; he's just Lucasfilm's yes-man.

This aside, the Han Solo spinoff drew criticism even when it was first announced. Why does Star Wars, a franchise with a literal galaxy to explore, continue to tell stories about the same characters in the same pockets of the universe? Why not branch out into uncharted territory?

The Han Solo movie also runs the risk of souring the great legacy of the character by delivering an underwhelming portrayal of him, and considering that Harrison Ford's Han is one of the greatest characters of all time, that's a terrifying thought.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
