The Hate: It sounds like a stupid idea with an incorrect choice of tone.

2018's Robin Hood (previously known as Robin Hood: Origins), starring Taron Egerton as the titular character, seems like a completely ridiculous idea on paper.

It's been described as a "grittier" take on the folk legend, even though we just had a gritty Robin Hood movie in 2010, and it was decidedly poor. If Ridley Scott can't make it work, who can?

What is it about a tale featuring a gang of grown men wearing tights that screams "gritty" anyway? There's a jarring disconnect between the source material and the movie here, one that indicates the filmmakers don't have a clue what they're doing.

This aside, the fact that there are a handful of Robin Hood movies in development really does prove that studios care more about bankable franchises than making good movies, even though the latter option is generally the best way to turn a profit.

A dark Robin Hood movie just isn't something we need, and it's something nobody was asking for. The fact that we haven't even seen a poster yet, and the movie opens next March, tells you all you need to know.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
