8 Upcoming Sequels Nobody Ever Thought Would Happen
5. Top Gun: Maverick
Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise, is one of those '80s movies that everybody apparently likes, but hasn't watched in, oh, twenty-five years. It's the very definition of an '80s movie, with its anti-Russian storyline, super poppy soundtrack, and Kelly McGillis in a starring role. Whether that makes it great or awful... well, that's for you to decide.
Top Gun: Maverick, a fully-fledged follow-up, has been in development in one way or another for almost a decade. First time we heard about it was in 2010, when Tony Scott was rumoured to return as director. His tragic suicide in 2012 prevented the film from moving forward, though, and as a result it seemed as though this pretty unwanted sequel would never see the light of day.
But Top Gun: Maverick, it turns out, isn't going to be one of those endlessly announced but never made sequels, after all: it's entered the production stage and has been given a release date of July 2019. Set to be helmed by Joseph Kosinski, who worked with Cruise on sci-fi flick Oblivion, it's astonishing to think this is legit.
Did Tom Cruise decide that, after the generic awfulness of The Mummy, one of the worst films of last year, that sequels are his only hope of box office success? Hell, better this sequel than a follow-up to The Mummy, right?
