5. The Killing Joke Parallel Doesnt Fit
After a brief tease a couple of weeks back of Leto with a camera obscuring most of his face, the first clear image of his Joker again homages The Killing Joke, a landmark comic in the history of the Joker that still manages to stoke debate to this day (did Bats really kill his nemesis at the end?). The image of Joker when he finally snaps, hands clutching head, is an iconic one and it's no coincidence that Ayer and Leto have chosen that stance for their grand unveiling - it's a classic look and one that seems intended to assuage any of the criticism of the bigger changes. That's all well and good - a pretty smart idea by itself - but it's really creating a comic link that probably doesn't really exist. Is the Joker we're going to get in Suicide Squad and beyond actually going to be heavily linked to the The Killing Joke? Probably not. Early reports seem to suggest the character's going to be more in line with the iteration from The Dark Knight Returns, and even though this image suggests it's not totally lifted from Frank Miller's version, it's also unlikely to match up any more with Alan Moore's take, making the parallels rather pointless.
