This one is just far too appropriate to be surprising. The Rum Diary directed by Bruce Robinson is a 2011 adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel of the same name. It tells the story of an American journalist (portrayed by Johnny Depp) who bags a freelance job in Puerto Rico, and details the struggles he faces while adapting to island life (and by struggles I mean drinking lots of drinking). Thompson's writing frequently told tales of drug and booze-fuelled excess (things that Thompson himself was no stranger to), so it's only appropriate that Depp would indulge while filming an adaptation of one of his works. Not only that, but Depp was actually friends with Thompson late in his life, so it basically counts as a loving tribute. According to the director Bruce Robinson, he and Depp had a morning ritual which involved Dunhill cigarettes and a bottle of alcohol (on the rocks). Not since Pirates Of The Caribbean has so much rum been gone.
