9 Changes Warner Bros Wishes It Could Make To Its DC Universe
7. A Different Universe Stewart
Warner handed Zack Snyder the keys to its DC kingdom and in return it got two divisive Superman films, a messy Suicide Squad and a critically-acclaimed Wonder Woman. Although he didn’t direct the latter pair, he oversaw them both as producer and had some creative influence - let’s not forget Gal Gadot was cast, and first appeared, in a Snyder film.
Add muddied tonal waters to this picture and you can bet the studio isn’t satisfied with a return of one unequivocal hit out of four and therefore regrets its decision to give Snyder such as key role in shaping its answer to the MCU.
Snyder’s passion for comic book movies is not in question, so there’s no reason why he shouldn’t have been involved in the DC cinematic universe in a lesser capacity, heading up one sub-series or taking charge of a lone character’s solo outings, but it feels like the studio has been gradually distancing itself from the filmmaker’s overarching vision.
Both Patty Jenkins and Joss Whedon have demonstrated a firmer grasp of the appropriate tone for characters like Superman and Wonder Woman in their previous films, so there’s a case to argue that one of those should have been the universe steward from the beginning.
Snyder, who dropped out of Justice League late in the day due to a family tragedy, is expected to be involved in the DC movie universe in a diminished capacity going forward, and that should have been the extent of his involvement from the beginning.
