9 Classic Movies With Insane Unofficial Sequels
1. Never Say Never Again
It might seem weird to label a film starring Sean Connery as James Bond unofficial, but Connery’s last time in the tux is definitely not a part of the official series. The movie is essentially a remake of Thunderball, and came about after a nasty lawsuit between Ian Fleming and producer Kevin McClory, who helped create certain Bond staples but wasn’t given proper credit for them.
He won rights to the story, so for years, he tried to make his own Bond film free of MGM, which only came together once Connery was lured back. The film is a weird alternate universe spin-off, with the aging Bond going up against an evil genius. It’s movie that has Bond using his own urine as a weapon, Rowan Atkinson playing a bumbling comedy sidekick and a crazed female villain so likable you almost wish the movie followed her instead.
Nobody involved with the film holds in high regard – Connery least of all – yet it does make for a surprisingly apt end to his take on Bond; even if it exists in non-continuity limbo.
Can you think of any other films that tried to pass themselves off as sequels to a classic? Name and shame them in the comments below.
