9 Definitive Italian Cannibal Movies

9. Papaya: Love Goddess Of The Cannibals (1978)

love goddess of the cannibals Weird Italian exploitation from the hands of Joe D'Amato, there is some mild gore but the main focus in the film is sex. A reporter and a scientist are on an Island considering building a nuclear facility. The beautiful Papaya, who is some kind of Goddess or priestess, is vehemently opposed to this development on her island and who dispatches of any outsider who may threaten her cannibal tribe's existence. A lot of you may think that Joe D'Amato is a horror hack beyond all redemption, but he was a great cinematographer and his films look fantastic. Papaya is no exception with D'Amato lapping up the exotic locale. D'Amato as we all know, had a particular kink for adding borderline hardcore to hardcore porn with gory horror thrills. There are not so much gory thrills in Papaya - even though the film deals with cannibals. There is a lot of softcore sex but it may be too mild (and mild is not a word you would usually associate with D'Amato!) to excite the viewer's attention. Instead, Papaya has a body that men are literally dying for. Given a recent release by Shameless Screen Entertainment who obviously thought there was enough good stuff in the movie to launch it upon us.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
