9 Horror Movie Franchises That Literally Do The Same Thing Repeatedly
2. Saw - Always Returning To The Same Trap Ideas
The biggest and most influential body horror film franchise ever created, Saw began in 2004 as a low budget mystery thriller and has since expanded into a series nine feature films strong with a more divisive reputation than any other film series out there.
The films revolve around John Kramer, aka. the Jigsaw Killer, and his group of apprentices who devise traps that are designed to test a human's will to survive, be it psychologically or physically. Kramer is constantly recycling the same spiel that he isn't in fact a killer and that all of his traps have a way of being survived should a subject demonstrate enough will to live, however just recycling the same lines over and over again doesn't make things anymore believable and Kramer's true motivations remain just as much a mystery in the later films as they are in the first.
Even the traps and tools Jigsaw employs end up repeating themselves over the course of the franchise. There are three separate people, Amanda, Hoffman and Jill, who end up having a bear trap placed on them in the first seven films and the bathroom from the first film ends up being revisted in Saws 2, 3, 4 and 3D for example.
The repetition extends even further than that however, with the Blind Hangman's Trap from Saw 3D and the Blind and Mute trap from Saw IV both robbing subjects of their sight, the Flammable Gas and Furnace traps from 1 and 2 respectively both incinerating their victims and the Bathroom trap from the original and Pound of Flesh trap from Saw VI requiring players to hack off one of their limbs.
