9 Iconic Comic Book Storylines That Sucked In Movies

1. The Dark Phoenix Saga - X-Men: The Last Stand

The first two X-Men movies heavily alluded to the Dark Phoenix Saga, and if Bryan Singer had stayed on as director for The Last Stand that’s clearly where he would have gone. Instead, he left to make Superman Returns, and the auteur known as Brett Rather came onboard.

One of the biggest problems with The Last Stand is there’s way too much crammed into it; too many characters, subplots and action scenes, and it tries to condense it all into a slim running time. This has the effect of not allowing things to breathe properly, with the Dark Phoenix Saga suffering worst of all. Instead of dedicating the whole movie to it, Jean Grey basically becomes Magneto’s henchwoman. She even kills Cyclops off-screen, robbing the story of a crucial emotional element from the comic.

The whole thing is sloppily handled and the fans hated it, which led to it being retconned out of existence when Singer returned for Days Of Future Past.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
